My name is Shyam Lama and I am from Thulo Parsel village. I would like to share my side of story to everybody that how the founders of Madat Nepal -Hemmy Clevis and Pauli Gerritsen- had unconditionally supported our family all these years and made us what we are today.
Like any other family in Thulo Parsel, I was born in a poor farmer family. However, my father, Panchabir Tamang, met Pauli during a trekking and that changed everything in our life. She changed the course of faith of our family. After knowing our situation and how we were struggling due to poverty in village, Pauli and Hemmy helped us for our education and much more. My father worked as a Trekking Guide in seasons and worked for Madat Nepal as a Project Manager too. Madat Nepal also did a lot for our village such as building a school, a health post, organizing free health camps and supporting poor children’s education including me, my brother Bhim B. Lama and my younger sister Suvadra Lama.
If the people like Pauli, Hemmy and Klaas from Madat Nepal wouldn’t reach out their helping hands to us, we would never have become what we are now. We were one of those fortunate kids who got the hands of Madat Nepal on us. With Pauli and Hemmy, we have a very deep emotional connection too. They were always there encouraging us to do our best and to support us financially. Thank you for always being there for us and being our guardian angels.
With the burning desire to get out of poverty and to achieve success, we, (three siblings) grasped the opportunity, studied and worked hard. Eventually, I completed my Bachelor in Computer Science from Purbanchal University, sponsored by Hemmy. After working for years in Nepal, it became clear to me that due to political instability, lack of career opportunities, pathways and low pay in respect to education qualification; I decided to go to the United State for further education and seek an opportunity so that I can provide a better life for my family and myself.
I got the student visa and went for further study. After a long bumpy journey of 6 years struggle, I finally completed my Master’s Degree (Master in Computer Science) in August 2013. I then started working contract jobs for a couple of years in IT companies. Later in 2015, I was hired by AT&T, one of the largest Telecommunication in United State, for Senior System Engineer Position and since then I have been working for them. Now, I am living in San Ramon, California with my wife Kaushila Rana and 3 years old daughter Theia Rana Lama.
My only goal to come to United State was to make enough money so that I can support my family. Since then I have been trying to give them the best life as I can.
My younger brother, Bhim B. Lama, completed his MBBS with the help of Madat Nepal sponsorship in 2015. After practicing for a couple of years, he has been continuing his studies in B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan, Nepal with my help and he just completed his education. He is planning to be back and work in Katmandu so that he can be close to Mom and Dad and take care of them.
My younger sister, Suvadra Lama, also was sponsored by Madat Nepal for her school, +2 and for BSC Nursing. She completed her Nursing in 2014, since then she is working at Neuro Hospital and making a decent living out of it. Now, she is married to Sontosh Adhikari and has a 2 years old son.
Whatever we have achieved in life today has been possible only because of the help we got from Madat Nepal. When I look back into my past I can’t stop thanking Madat Nepal that has supported us in every step of life making us independent and confident persons that we have become now.
